What Does the Door Hinge Do, and How Does It Wear?

Where it sits

Top and bottom of the opening, at the cabinet side, largely out of view. On a stainless built-in the upper one can usually be found by swinging the door wide and looking along its top edge. On a Designer Series column there is nothing to find: Sub-Zero describes a hidden door hinge that gives a flush appearance in single or side-by-side installations, which is exactly why the front reads as cabinetry.

Either way the pair does the same two jobs. It fixes the line the door turns about, and it holds the face of that door parallel to the opening over its whole height.

How it fails

By weight rather than by breakage, and slowly. Each one was set up for a particular door carrying a particular front. Add a thicker slab, a denser timber, a finish brushed on after hanging or a long solid handle, and the same pivot is asked to hold more than it was adjusted for. Bins packed with bottles do the same thing intermittently.

What you notice is geometry. The gap down the handle side stops being even from top to bottom. The door meets the frame at the top and stands a whisker off it at the bottom, or the reverse, and the seal then works along part of its length only. Frost, or a patch that never gets properly cold, follows wherever the contact was lost. A door that used to draw itself the last inch starts to want a push.

Sound is the late sign, never the early one. By the time a pivot is audible it has generally been out of true for a long while.

What replacing it involves

Measuring before anything else. A visit reads the gap against the carcase rather than against the door beside it, checks whether the cabinet is still sitting level in its opening, and weighs up what is hanging on the front — because hardware that is simply overloaded will drop again a month after it is changed.

Where the geometry has moved but nothing has actually failed, the answer is an adjustment. Where the pivot itself is worn, it comes out with the door supported, a genuine Sub-Zero part goes in, and the door is then set square and the seal checked with the door shut rather than admired with it open. Custom fronts normally stay exactly where they are for this.
