Diagnosis

What it usually turns out to be

In the order it gets worked through on site — cheapest and most likely first, the sealed system last, because that is the honest order rather than the profitable one.

  1. Air, not refrigerant

    A dual-refrigeration cabinet makes cold on the freezer side and doles it out through a damper and an evaporator fan. When the fresh-food compartment climbs while the freezer stays hard, the fault is nearly always in that hand-off: a stalled damper, a fan seizing against ice, or a defrost cycle that stopped clearing the coil.

  2. A condenser with nothing left to give

    Grille off, and the coil is either clean or it is a felt mat. Add a kitchen sitting in the high nineties and a condenser fan that has slowed, and a perfectly healthy sealed system still cannot dump its heat. This is the most common summer call and the cheapest of them to put right.

  3. The sealed system, and only last

    A low charge, a restricted drier or a tired compressor is real, and it is also where the number changes. That gets diagnosed with gauges and a clamp meter rather than by elimination, and you hear what it means before anyone touches a torch.

Three things worth checking

None of this is a repair. It is the difference between a first visit that starts with questions and one that starts with a meter in the right place.

  • Read the vent temperature at the top of the fresh-food compartment rather than trusting the door display.
  • Look through the lower grille. If you cannot see daylight through the coil, mention it on the phone.
  • Note whether the compressor ever stops. A cabinet that never cycles off is a different fault from one that never starts.

Which end of a band a cabinet lands on depends on the part and on how much has to come apart to reach it. You hear one firm number for the whole job, agreed with you before anything is opened up or ordered, and the $89 service call comes off that number once you approve the work.
